My kids are spending too much time on their gadgets, digital devices… as a parent, what can I do? Set a balance and with healthy and realistic expectations and genuine intentions, situations with your kids do not have to be a power struggle.
1. Set boundaries. Instead of telling them how things will be, have a conversation with them. Hear THEM out then they have to hear you out too. Explain why it’s important to be aware of their surroundings and to communicate with people who are in front of them and face to face!
2. Give schedules too on what time periods work so they will know you are listening to them.
a. How many minutes or hours are allowed in a day?
b. When and where NOT to use it.
c. When and where to use it.
d. How to use it. (games vs. texting a friend vs. scrolling through tiktok)
3. Discuss consequences. If they go against their agreements with you, there is a consequence.
4. Set the example. Be present. Get to know your kids. Let them get to know you too.
5. Plan activities that will make them forget about their gadgets. Family time is fun time. Keep them busy. This will build excitement to be present in real life.
